About the National Games
The National Games of India is a multi-sport event held every four years, akin to the Olympics. It brings together athletes from various Indian states and union territories to compete in a wide range of sports.
History of the National Games
The first National Games were held in 1924 in Lahore, then part of British India. Since then, the event has been held 35 times, with the most recent edition taking place in Gujarat in 2022.
National Games 2023
Venue and Dates
The National Games 2023 will be held in Goa from October 20 to November 4, 2023. The Games will be held in various venues across the state.
Participating States and Union Territories
All 36 states and union territories of India are expected to participate in the National Games 2023.
Sports Disciplines
43 sports disciplines will be contested in the 2023 National Games. Some of the sports included are:
- Athletics
- Basketball
- Cricket
- Football
- Hockey
- Kabaddi
- Swimming
New Sports
Several new sports have been added to the event for the first time, including:
- Esports
- Mallakhamb
- Softball
- Surfing
- Wushu
Governing Bodies
The National Games are governed by two organizations:
- Indian Olympic Association (IOA)
- Association of Indian Universities (AIU)
The Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) is the governing federation for kabaddi in India.
The National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy was first held in 1941.
